These are genuine pedagogical methods, each described with the context in which they were developed or refined: the grade band, the subject, the resource level, and the curriculum framework that shaped them. Secondary mathematics · Grades 9–11 / Years 10–12
Error analysis as the primary formative signal — not scoring, not correction
Source context: Developed across secondary mathematics contexts in East Africa, Southeast Asia, and urban secondary schools in Canada. Applies in any setting where marking time is limited and class sizes are large.
The standard practice is to mark a test, return it with a score, and move on. Error analysis inverts this: before any scores are discussed, the class spends 20 minutes identifying which errors were conceptual (wrong model) and which were procedural (right model, execution slip). Students do this in pairs using their own returned papers, guided by three questions: What did I think was true that turned out not to be? Where did I apply a correct idea incorrectly? What would I need to re-examine before attempting a similar problem? The teacher’s role shifts from marking to facilitating the classification of errors — a different, often more revealing use of the same assessment data. In large classes with limited marking time, error analysis can replace detailed written feedback entirely without sacrificing diagnostic value: a student who can name the conceptual error in their own work has received more useful feedback than one who received a corrected solution they did not examine.
Adapting to other settings: Scales down to individual desk work where pair work is not feasible. Requires no additional materials — only the returned assessment and the three-question guide, which can be given orally.
Primary literacy · Grades 2–4 / Years 3–5
Read-aloud with structured prediction pauses — oral comprehension ahead of decoding
Source context: Used extensively in primary settings across sub-Saharan Africa and in multilingual primary classrooms in the United Kingdom and New Zealand. Particularly effective where students’ oral vocabulary in the instruction language exceeds their decoding fluency.
Decoding fluency and comprehension are separable skills, and in early readers they often develop at different rates — a student can understand a complex text when it is read aloud before they can decode it themselves. Read-aloud with structured prediction pauses exploits this gap: the teacher reads a text aloud and stops at pre-selected points (typically three to four per 15-minute session) to ask students to predict what happens next and state the evidence from the text that supports their prediction. The evidence requirement is the discipline — a student cannot simply guess; they must identify a specific prior event or description. Over time this builds the habit of reading for evidence rather than summary. The prediction pause is the entire technique; no specialist materials are required. A teacher marks the stopping points in their own copy of the text before the session.
Adapting to other settings: Works in any language of instruction. The evidence requirement can be reduced to “what in the story made you think that?” for younger readers. Class size is not a constraint — predictions can be shared with a neighbour rather than whole-class.
Secondary sciences · Grades 8–10 / Years 9–11
The two-column lab debrief — separating what we observed from what we concluded
Source context: Standard in inquiry-based science programmes in Scandinavia and widely used in International Baccalaureate Middle Years programmes. Adaptable to any secondary science setting where students conduct investigations, including lower-resource settings with minimal equipment.
A common failure mode in student science write-ups is collapsing observation and conclusion: “the liquid turned blue because the pH was basic.” The two-column debrief makes the distinction structural rather than stylistic. After any investigation — including a demonstration the teacher performs and students observe — students draw a line down the centre of a page. The left column is for observations: only what was directly observed, with no interpretation. The right column is for conclusions: what the observation allows them to infer, and why. The teacher’s role in the debrief is to challenge any right-column claim that has smuggled in an assumption the left column does not support. The format trains the scientific reasoning habit more reliably than reminders to “describe what you see” because the separation is physical, not just cognitive.
Adapting to other settings: Requires no equipment — applies equally to a teacher-conducted demonstration in a zero-equipment setting and to a full student investigation. The column structure can be a printed template or a folded sheet of paper.
History and social studies · Grades 7–10 / Years 8–11
The outsider source first — building a context gap before introducing the primary source
Source context: Developed in history education programmes in Australia and used in secondary social studies across multiple curriculum frameworks. Most effective for topics where students lack prior knowledge of the historical context.
Primary sources are most useful when students have enough context to recognise what makes the source unusual, contested, or significant. Without that context, a primary source is just a difficult text. The outsider-source-first approach builds the context gap deliberately: before introducing a primary source, the teacher provides a brief contemporary account of the same event or period from a perspective that was not included in the primary source — an observer from another country, a record from the other side of a negotiation, a later historian’s summary of what was missing from official accounts. Students read this first. Then they read the primary source and answer: what does this source leave out that we already know was happening? What might the author have known but chosen not to record? The gap between the two sources is the historical thinking exercise. It requires no specialist curriculum materials — only the primary source and a teacher-selected contemporary account, which can often be found in a standard textbook from a different national curriculum.
Adapting to other settings: The contemporary account does not need to be from a textbook — a brief teacher-written summary of the missing context works equally well. The gap question can be whole-class or small-group depending on class size.
Early childhood · Grades Reception–2 / Years 1–3
The clean-up narration — vocabulary and sequencing embedded in transition routines
Source context: Used in early childhood programmes in the Netherlands, South Africa, and indigenous language immersion settings in Canada and New Zealand. Particularly valuable in multilingual classrooms where routine language is a primary vocabulary-acquisition context.
Transitions between activities — clean-up, line-up, move to the mat — are typically managed with instructions but not exploited as learning time. The clean-up narration converts the transition into a sequencing and vocabulary exercise. As students clean up, the teacher narrates what is happening in real time, using precise vocabulary (“Amara is stacking the blocks in size order — largest at the bottom, smallest at the top. She is checking that each block is aligned before she places the next one”). The narration models both vocabulary and sequencing language without interrupting the activity. Students who hear their actions narrated with precise language acquire that vocabulary in a meaningful, procedural context rather than from a list. In a multilingual classroom, the narration can run in two languages simultaneously, with the teacher switching at natural clause boundaries rather than translating sentence by sentence.
Adapting to other settings: No materials required. The narration is the entire technique — it requires teacher attention but no preparation. Effective with class sizes up to 30 if the teacher moves around the room rather than narrating from a fixed position.
